Amtrak’s Five Year Plans

Required by statute and presented to Congress every other February, Amtrak’s Five Year Plan provides a summary of the company’s strategies, opportunities and needs. In 2017, Paper Robot’s was tasked with re-imagining the format of this plan. Our creative director elevated the initiative from a 25-page PowerPoint to a fully-designed 160+ page report with a fresh identity that aligned with Amtrak’s brand standards. The new concept was extremely successful, and PR has been tasked with creating these plans ever since. We are extremely proud to do so.

Extensive Layout and Design

When each Five Year Plan kicks off, a wide range of departments provide Paper Robot with documents outlining required content. Every edition of the plan also boasts a fresh design, which is a major undertaking for such an expansive project. Once the design toolkit has been created, our creative director lays out content in a way that’s easy to follow, creating engaging custom graphics wherever it will enhance engagement. All provided charts, graphs and infographics are redesigned to match the overall style. For imagery, Paper Robot selects photos from a brand-approved media library based on the content of each report.

This high-touch, high-profile project is always produced on a strict deadline—often within a month. Since it’s created for Congress and available to the public on Amtrak’s website, near perfection is required and attention to detail is absolutely critical. After years of working with the team at Amtrak and developing strong rapport, Paper Robot has a very good understanding of the company, and is trusted to pull everything together into a cohesive, accurate and easy-to-understand package.
